Age Is Just A Number

Age Is Just A Number by Anita Brown

Should we allow our age to dictate what we should and shouldn’t be doing?

Just because we may be in our 40’s, 50’s or 60’s etc. doesn’t mean we can’t try new things. You could change your career, do further training or challenge yourself. We don’t have to fit into a stereotype just because we are ‘middle aged’.

When I joined Informed Financial Planning in November 2017, at the wrong side of my 40’s, this was a whole new career for me after spending the majority of my working life in education. I didn’t have any experience in the finance world at all. I was very much like a fish out of water, but I didn’t let that faze me, I wanted to learn as much as I could about the industry. So, when the management encouraged the admin team to study for the LP2 exam in Financial Services Products & Solutions, I decided that I would give it a go, even though I hadn’t studied since the 80’s! It was quite daunting at first trying to digest and take in all the information we were studying, but as each week went by my thirst for knowledge grew and grew. It also helped me immensely with my job as I was getting to understand more about the products we advised on. Fast forward to January 2019 when I sat the exam and believe it or not, I passed! I did doubt myself at the beginning as I thought “how will I retain this at my age?” but amazingly, I did. I’ve even started studying for another qualification, it’s the next level up but I’m not going to let that stop me. Will I pass it? who knows, but I’m going to give it my best.

I’ve always been quite active and wanted to challenge myself, so when a friend agreed to take part in a ‘Tough Mudder’ with me I jumped at the chance. Again, why do we have to stop doing stuff as we get older? I completed it and absolutely loved it; I also have some lovely bruises to show for it! But I felt so exhilarated when I finished as it was a great achievement.

Earlier this year I came across one of those quotes on social media and it really struck a chord with me ‘Don’t limit your challenges, Challenge your limits’. So, this is what I’m living by. Just because I’m at a certain age, doesn’t mean I have to stop living life to the full… Roll on my 50’s!
